What's Happening With Your Dental Implants?

by Stacy Nelson

Many people have dental implants. If you are one of these people, then you probably love the way they make your mouth feel. Whether you have a whole set of replacement teeth with dental implants or you just have a few posts in your mouth, you notice your dental implants most when they feel funny or are making you uncomfortable.

You cannot get a cavity or plaque on your dental implants because they aren't real teeth; rather, dental implants are made from a porcelain or composite crown that is placed on a metal post screwed into your jaw bone, protruding from your gums in the end. Your dental implant needs will be minimal and will mostly revolve around brushing them like you do your normal teeth and flossing to keep your gums healthy.

If you have both natural teeth and implanted teeth, your oral health care routine will still include getting cleanings and fillings in the natural teeth. X-rays are also necessary to make sure your dental implants are still posted well and are not giving you any trouble. However, it is possible to have trouble. Here are some of the things that may be going on with your dental implants.

They're aching

If you have an infection or other swelling in your jaw bone or gums, then you will notice pain around your dental implant posts. This is because germs can get down under your posts when your teeth are newly put in, especially if you have a cold or other upper respiratory virus or have new bacteria introduced to your mouth. Let your dentist know if your dental implants are hurting or aching or if you feel fevered, have a cold that is going into your ears or sinuses, your breath is bad, or you have other concerns. A prescription for antibiotics can be helpful.

They're loose

As your teeth shift or your swelling goes down, your dental implants may feel loose. This isn't a super bad thing because they may 'tighten up' again in the future. However, it's wise to have your dentist give you an oral exam if you are worried about your dental implants if several of them appear to be loose and you have accompanying pain or bleeding with them. You may have to have the posts reset or have other things done to protect your dental implants and make them tighter. Make an appointment with your dentist right away for all oral health concerns you have.
