Recognizing A Dental Emergency

by Stacy Nelson

A dental emergency can leave you in a lot of pain and leave your teeth in a dangerous situation. The longer you go without proper treatment, the worse things can become. This is why it's important for you to know that you can get emergency dental treatment at any time. So, if you are faced with a serious dental problem, you can get in even if it's after hours, on the weekend, or on a holiday. You should familiarize yourself with dental emergencies, so you can better understand when you might want to wait for the dentist's regular hours or make the call for emergency services. Here is more on dental emergencies:

You are in severe pain

There are many reasons why your teeth may be causing you to be in extreme pain. You may have an infection, you may have injured your teeth, or you may be dealing with something like your wisdom teeth being crowded as they are trying to come in. No matter what the cause is, you don't want to wait when you are in this kind of pain. You should get in for an emergency dental visit, so the cause of the pain can be addressed and you can start to feel better.

You knocked a tooth out

If you have knocked one or more of your teeth out, then it is extremely important for you to get in right away, no matter what time or day it is. You want to make it clear when you call to let the dentist know you are coming in that you have knocked your teeth out, so they know what to expect as soon as you arrive and are ready to receive you. The best way for you to travel with your teeth is to tuck them between your gums and your cheek. That way you keep them moist and there is a better chance that the dentist will be able to re-implant them, so you can keep them.

You have an infection

If you feel you have a tooth infection, then you don't want to put off treatment. You need to be seen by the emergency dentist immediately. A tooth infection is dangerous, and the infection can spread, making you violently ill. You will more than likely be put on a course of antibiotics to get rid of the infection, and the sooner you are able to start them, the better off you will be.
