What Options Do You Have When Getting Dental Implants?

by Stacy Nelson

Having missing teeth can be a huge negative impact on one's self esteem. Some people even lose the desire to smile if they feel their teeth are unattractive. Fortunately, many have been able to have their smiles repaired to perfection by getting dental implants.  Dental implants are attached to the gums under the gum tissue so they are held in place tightly. These are some of the different options you have when getting dental implants.

Single Tooth Implants

For those who have only a single missing tooth, a single tooth implant is ideal. This is done by having a single abutment attached to the jawbone under the gum line. Then the implant is attached to the abutment. Finally, the artificial tooth, or crown, is attached to the implant.

This can also be done for those who have one missing tooth on top and one missing tooth on the bottom. A single tooth implant is the best option for those who do not have more than one missing tooth in side by side spaces.

Multiple Tooth Implants

Multiple tooth implants are perfect for restoring teeth for those who have several or all of their teeth missing. This is done by creating a dental plate that looks similar to dentures. Each plate has the number of artificial teeth in it that is needed to replace the missing teeth.

For each plate, two or more abutments and implants are needed to hold the teeth in place properly. For example, if a person needs a full upper plate of artificial teeth implanted, most likely at least 4 implants will be needed to attach it to the jawbone.

Fixed Bridges

Fixed bridges are another type of dental implant. These are normally installed for those who have two or three missing teeth that normally sit side by side. With fixed bridges, two or three artificial teeth are attached under the gum line on top of the jawbone.

Fixed bridges are best for those who do not have a strong enough jawbone to tolerate the implant being drilled into it. Fixed bridges may be permanently attached or may also be removable for cleaning purposes.

Having dental implants is normally more expensive than having dentures or removable bridges made. However, some prefer dental implants because they look and feel more like natural teeth. Dental implants can also be easier to eat with and never require denture adhesive to remain in place.
