3 Things To Look Forward To With Invisalign

by Stacy Nelson

Clear aligners such as Invisalign offer significant benefits. If you want orthodontic treatment without all the glue and wires of traditional braces, Invisalign treatment is a smart choice. Here are three things you can look forward to when you choose this dental treatment:

1. Floss without special equipment.

Flossing is extremely important for overall dental health. It allows you to clean away plaque, bacteria, and food particles that can collect between your teeth and below your gum line. Flossing remains just as important while you're undergoing orthodontic treatment, but it becomes harder to do while wearing traditional braces because the wires get in the way. You can overcome this obstacle by using an oral irrigator or stiffened floss, but this requires purchasing special products. Invisalign allows you to continue your teeth care routine as usual without the need to change anything.

2. Take your clear aligners out for special events.

It's important that you wear your clear aligners as much as you can. Wearing them more often means your treatment will be completed sooner. Dentists typically recommend that you keep your aligners on your teeth for at least 22 hours each day. This gives you enough time to take them out for meals, snacks, and dental cleaning. However, you may leave your clear aligners out of your mouth for special events.

If you want to attend your prom or a wedding without wearing your orthodontic equipment, clear aligners give you the freedom to do so. Just be aware that your aligners may feel extra tight when you put them back on. Always make sure to discuss your plans for skipping a day of treatment with your dentist, and make sure you don't do this too often.

3. Avoid unwanted staining patterns.

Ideally, your teeth will stay pristine and white throughout your orthodontic treatment. However, teeth yellowing can occur due to poor dental hygiene or dietary habits. When you wear traditional braces, metal brackets are glued onto your teeth. Your teeth will remain their original color under the glue, but if your teeth become discolored over the course of your treatment, the enamel around the bracket will change color. This can lead to an unwanted two-tone staining pattern on your teeth that may be difficult to get rid of. When you choose clear aligners, you can completely avoid this situation. Your teeth will stay one uniform color during and after your treatment.
