3 Foods To Be Careful With This Holiday Season

by Stacy Nelson

The holiday season is quickly approaching, and that often means a lot of delicious goodies to be enjoyed. While it is fantastic to indulge every once in a while, during the holidays, there are certain foods that are very hard and can result in cracked teeth. This can be especially problematic if you have very weak teeth to begin with. Cracked teeth can often end in a root canal and crown, so it is important to be very careful when you are biting on problematic foods. The following are just a few examples of some holiday goodies that you will need to be particularly careful with this season:

Caramel Popcorn

Caramel and popcorn were always meant to go together, as together, they make a delicious treat. Many families receive caramel popcorn as gifts every holiday. However, it can wreak havoc on your teeth. The popcorn husks can get underneath the teeth and cause a painful abscess, while biting down on the hard kernels can result in a cracked tooth.

The caramel can also have negative impact on your teeth. It can accidently pull out any dental work you already have in place, such as crowns and bridges. That could result in a root canal or other dental emergency procedure.

Holiday Nut Mix

Another fun treat often seen at many holiday get-togethers is holiday nut mixes. Nuts of all varieties are very popular this time of year, either as a gift or as a snack on the holiday buffet. However, nuts can be hard on your teeth. The harder varieties of nuts, such as almonds, can be especially problematic.

Candied nuts are another popular treat. Once candied, nuts can become even harder due to the cooked sugar that coats the outside. It is important to be especially careful when enjoying this holiday treat.

Nuts, while a very healthy snack alternative for the holidays, can cause you to chip, crack, and fracture your teeth. You could find yourself needing a dentist right away if you break a tooth badly enough.

Hard Candy

Whether it is homemade or purchased, hard candy is a popular treat during the holidays. Again, just like other treats that have been mentioned, you have to be very careful with any hard food. Do not bite down on hard candy if you can avoid it, as it can result in a broken tooth. Instead, enjoy the candy by letting it slowly dissolve in your mouth. That way, you will not find yourself in the dentist chair this holiday season.
