Whistle When You Walk, Not When You Talk: Correcting Gap Teeth

by Stacy Nelson

If you have gap teeth, then you are probably ready to do something about it. Gap teeth can leave you feeling self-conscious about your smile. This may make you shy around new people. It may cause you to cover your mouth when you smile. It may cause you to run out of the room when you see someone pull out a camera, and it may even leave you walking away from certain opportunities because you don't want to speak in public or meet new people. However, there is actually a lot of things that can be done to help correct gap teeth so you can get the smile you have always wanted. This article will educate you on three ways a dentist can go about correcting your gap teeth.

Braces can correct your gap teeth

Braces are one of the more common ways in which gap or crooked teeth are corrected, especially in children. The braces are attached to the teeth surfaces using special brackets, wires and bands that are then tightened in a way that pulls the teeth closer together to close the gaps. Once you have braces put on you will need to go back in to see the dentist every so often to have the tightened again so that they continue to move your teeth. Each time you go in for them to be tightened, you can expect to leave feeling a bit of discomfort.

Clear aligners can also close the gaps in your teeth

Clear aligners are another way in which your dentist may suggest going about closing the gaps in your teeth. They work in the same manner as braces meaning that they work by putting force on certain teeth to cause them to move. The aligners are preferred by some people because they aren't as easy to see and they can be removed so you will be able to get a break from wearing them. However you should realize they can take longer to give you the smile that you are trying to achieve.

Porcelain veneers can be used to correct gap teeth

Porcelain veneers are another option for correcting gap teeth. The dentist will prepare your teeth buy bringing some of them down in size and then make a mold of your mouth. The mold goes to a lab where the veneers are made to fit. When they come back to the dentist they will bond them in place and you will have the smile that you have been looking forward to.
