3 Natural Substances For More Effective Teeth Cleaning

by Stacy Nelson

If you would like cleaner teeth, you don't always have to rely on the latest commercial item on your drug store shelf. Natural substances that you may already have at home can be used as adjuncts to your current oral hygiene regimen for a new level of teeth cleaning. Here are a few natural substances that can help you clean your teeth more effectively:

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is an antiseptic solution that is usually available in a three-percent concentration. When hydrogen peroxide is placed in the mouth, it usually produces a white foam. The foaming action is due to the release of oxygen from the solution. This oxygen gas kills the anaerobic bacteria in your mouth that are responsible for most bad breath odors.

Anaerobic bacteria emit volatile sulfur compounds that give bad breath its characteristic stale smell. However, these microbes are unable to live in the presence of oxygen. Hydrogen peroxide can be mixed with an equal amount of water to form a natural teeth cleaning mouth rinse.

Baking Soda

By sprinkling a bit of baking soda on your toothbrush, you can reduce the amount of demineralizing acid in your mouth. Baking soda is alkaline, and it helps neutralize oral acids. Some people brush with the powder by dipping a wet brush directly into the baking soda and brushing. However, you can also sprinkle baking soda in a cup of water to make an alkaline mouth rinse. In addition, the baking soda can be sprinkled on top of commercial toothpaste after the paste is applied to your brush.

Oil

Any edible oil can be used for oil pulling. The ancient Indian practice of oil pulling involves swishing oil about your oral cavity for a period before spitting it out. As the oil touches the surfaces of your mouth, it traps oral bacteria. The longer you pull with the oil, the more bacteria are trapped.

Even though any natural, edible oil can be used. Some people favor olive and coconut oils for their antimicrobial properties. Sesame oil is also often used.

After a session of oil pulling, rinse your mouth thoroughly and brush you teeth in your usual manner.

If you would like to improve your oral health, natural products may be able to help. Still, it is important to brush regularly and visit your dentist at least every six months for a professional dental cleaning. Schedule an appointment with a dentist in your area today.
