3 Simple & Natural Ways To Kill Bad Breath With Sage

by Stacy Nelson

You might have never heard of using sage oil to keep your breath smelling fresh. Well, sage oil contains several antibacterial properties that attack the harmful bacteria that cause bad breath. The following are 3 simple and natural ways to use sage to freshen your breath, and you'll also learn how it can help.

How Sage May Help

Bad breath is usually related to an overgrowth of oral pathogens and their sulphur waste deposits. Those sulphur deposits are usually the reason your breath smells. Sage attacks the oral pathogens, as it is toxic to them and inhibits their growth. But your breath can also smell because of other dental issues, like a cavity or an infection. So be sure you talk to your dental specialist about your halitosis. If one of these things is causing your bad breath, it might also cause other imperfections with your teeth, in which case you might want to consider cosmetic dentistry.

Now let's move on to a few ways to use sage.

1. The Simple Sage Spray

You'll need the following:

  • A clean small spray bottle
  • Sage oil
  • Raw honey to taste
  • Purified water

Steps:

  1. Drop 5 drops of sage oil in your spray bottle.
  2. Add a 1/8 of a teaspoon of raw honey.
  3. Fill up your bottle with water.
  4. Shake up your bottle, and spray it on your tongue to taste. Adjust it if you need to.
  5. This mix should last at least 2 weeks, depending on how often you use it.

2. The Sage Gum

You will need the following:

  • Chicle (gum) base
  • Raw honey
  • Xylitol
  • Sage oil

Steps:

  1. Boil 1/4 of a cup of chicle in a double boiler. This should take around 20 minutes.
  2. Sprinkle xylitol on a surface, and place the gum base over it once its done. Knead until the gum does not stick to your hand. Add more xylitol if it's too sticky.
  3. Flatten the gum, drizzle it with honey, and add 5 to 10 drops of sage oil.
  4. Carefully fold the honey in. Keep kneading and pulling the gum.
  5. Taste the gum, and make adjustments according to your liking.
  6. Flatten the gum as evenly as possible.
  7. Use a sharp knife to cut the gum into small regular-sized gum pieces.
  8. Wrap each piece inside small pieces of parchment paper and seal.
  9. You can keep these in your refrigerator, and they should last at least a month unless you can't resist them.

3. Be Bold & Chew On It

You can just purchase the sage plant and chew on the leaves from time to time. Make sure the sage is organic and that it is clean. You can add a little honey to make it more tolerable.
