3 Ways To Treat An Abscessed Tooth Before A Root Canal

by Stacy Nelson

If you have an abscessed tooth, getting a root canal is inevitable. If you have to wait a few weeks to get a root canal, then try these 3 treatments to numb the pain and to help fight the infection so that your tooth does not get worse.

Clove Oil

First, using essential oils can do wonders for a toothache or abscessed tooth. Clove oil is known for its ability to numb a tooth and the area surrounding it. A little goes a long way, so you can apply a few drops of clove oil to your aching tooth throughout each day.

Note that you do not need to use a lot of oil at one time because the oils are strong and concentrated. Using more oil will not necessarily numb your mouth anymore that it already has either, so use it according to the recommended amount.

Oregano Oil

Next, you can also apply oregano oil to your tooth. This type of oil can help to fight infection in the tooth, which is what you really need to be concerned about. While you can take prescription medication for the infection, using oregano oil directly on the tooth can have a greater affect.

Also, you can continue to use this oil for as long as is needed, and it will not have a negative effect on your body as can happen when you take antibiotics for too long.

If you would like, combine both oils mentioned so that you can apply them at the same time. You may want to keep some of the clove oil separate so that you can numb the tooth more often as it aches more.

Vinegar

Lastly, you can swish with vinegar, even though this is not a very tasty option. Vinegar fights bacteria and can get between your teeth as you swish. Use distilled vinegar or apple cider vinegar, and fill your mouth with a few teaspoons of vinegar. You do not need to measure the amount either. The point is to put enough in your mouth so that it can be swished easily.

Swish for a couple of minutes, and then spit the vinegar out. You can also dip your toothbrush in the vinegar after brushing with toothpaste, and then you can scrub the tooth a little extra to kill bacteria that still exists around it.

By using these 3 remedies, you can help your abscessed tooth to feel better, fight off the infection, and last a few more weeks until you can get into your endodontist for a root canal. For more information, contact Washington Township Dental Associates or a similar location.
